Modality in Spoken Malaysian English: A Comparison with the Supervarieties

The interest in Malaysian English generated many studies on focusing various grammatical features. However, modality is still under-researched, especially post-independence and new Englishes contexts. As a variety of English, it raises questions how has developed from the historical input variety, i.e., British resistant or accepting to American which highly influential globally. This study aimed contribute development by reporting corpus-based research frequency statistical differences set modal quasi-modal verbs three spoken corpora representing Malaysian, British, English. AntConc software (Version 3.5.9) (Anthony, 2020) was used explore generate relevant data corpus, while were accessed online using tools respective websites. findings show that use does not entirely resemble either Supervarieties, Log-likelihood test carried out shows significant certain between varieties, suggesting Supervarieties are always lead quasi-modals. results also suggest these mainly accounted for nativisation process evolution as variety. shed light current knowledge Keywords : corpus-based; verbs; English;
